Celestite
Distinct Sulfate Mineral
Celestite, also known as Celestine, is a beautiful mineral recognised for its delicate sky-blue crystals and glassy appearance. Its name originates from the Latin word caelestis, meaning heavenly, reflecting its distinctive colouring. Composed of strontium sulfate, Celestite commonly forms in sedimentary environments, particularly within limestone, dolomite and natural rock cavities. As mineral-rich fluids circulate through these spaces, crystals gradually develop over geological time, sometimes producing spectacular crystal-lined geodes. Although best known for its pale blue colour, Celestite can also occur in white, colourless, grey and pink varieties, making it a fascinating addition to mineral collections.
